Protecting Your Information in a Natural Disaster

You’ve seen the images of storm ravaged communities hit by the latest tornado, hurricane, or earthquake. People picking through the remains of their homes. Discovering scraps of paper, a half of an old wedding photograph, sopping wet photo albums and all kinds of odds and ends. Certainly simply surviving such a tragic event is something to be grateful for but as time goes on rebuilding and finding those scraps of paper can be like reliving the disaster again.

What if there was a way to safeguard those most important pictures and pieces of paper? There is! Having a web photo album is one way you can have access to and keep your information safe.

Vital Documents

Once the dust settles from the storm the work of rebuilding comes into play. There are issues like proof of insurance, titles, and deeds that need to be produced. What if all those documents are lying in the remains of your home? Or, you put them in a safe deposit box at your local bank – but that too is in ruins. Instead consider scanning each important document and uploading it to your web album. While you may need to eventually produce an original copy, having something that can be printed and given as immediate proof can speed up your claim and get you the help you need.

Don’t stop with these documents. Scans of other important items like birth certificates, marriage certificates, car titles, diplomas – really anything that is destructible and of importance can be housed online in case of emergencies.

Record of Objects

Having a record of the valuable things in your home is very important when it comes times to make an insurance claim. Photograph anything that is of value, such as electronics, antiques, and family heirlooms. Include any makers marks you can find. Upload any receipts you may have for recent purchases. Include in the comments any information you know about that item, even if it’s a family story that you can’t verify. When disaster does strike recalling all of the items lost will be a difficult task and one that you likely will be hesitant to undertake amidst everything else. But if everything is there in your online photo galleries you’ll be able to pull up the information and easily provide it to the insurance agent handling your case.

Photographs

When people think of online photo galleries they immediately think of photographs – naturally. It’s always devastating to see news videos showing an old woman or man picking through their destroyed home and holding up photo albums that were submerged – destroying decades of photographs inside. You may already have a lot of your images in digital format but consider scanning all of your film archives as well. Many of these images are likely irreplaceable and one disaster could destroy everything.

No one wants to think of living through and losing everything to a natural disaster but preparing for the worst case scenario is important. Use a web photo album to help you make this difficult task easier.
